How to order and submit your MDR1 test for dogs and cats

Ordering an MDR1 genetic test is a simple way to learn whether your dog or cat has a genetic mutation that affects how certain medications are processed. Results help you and your veterinarian choose safer treatment options and avoid drugs that could cause harmful reactions in your pet.

The steps below walk you through how to order the test, collect a sample, and submit it for analysis.

How to order an MDR1 test

  1. Create or log in to your WSU testing account
Go to the MDR1 testing webpage on the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory website and click on the “Order Now” button. You will be prompted to create a new account or login in to your existing account.
  2. Order the MDR1 genetic test
Click the “Order an MDR1 Test” button and complete your order online.

    • Blood sample: Your veterinarian can submit a blood sample directly (EDTA/purple-top tube).
  4. Submit the sample

  5. Receive results
Test results are typically available within 2–7 business days after the sample is received.
